These pains, which occur with a regular menstrual cycle, are normal for most women. However, for some women, severe pain can interfere with daily life.  <\/p><p class=\"\" data-start=\"644\" data-end=\"738\">So, what lies behind menstrual cramps and how can you manage this condition? Here are the details&#8230; <\/p><h4 class=\"\" data-start=\"740\" data-end=\"783\"><strong data-start=\"745\" data-end=\"783\">What is Menstrual Pain (Dysmenorrhea)?<\/strong><\/h4><p class=\"\" data-start=\"785\" data-end=\"959\">Menstrual pain is pain, cramping or discomfort in the lower abdomen during the first days of menstruation. <strong data-start=\"908\" data-end=\"924\">Dysmenorrhea<\/strong> is usually divided into two main groups:<\/p><ol data-start=\"961\" data-end=\"2083\"><li class=\"\" data-start=\"961\" data-end=\"1544\"><p class=\"\" data-start=\"964\" data-end=\"1011\"><strong data-start=\"964\" data-end=\"1011\">Primary Dysmenorrhea (Physiological Menstrual Pain):<\/strong><\/p><ul data-start=\"1015\" data-end=\"1544\"><li class=\"\" data-start=\"1015\" data-end=\"1240\"><p class=\"\" data-start=\"1017\" data-end=\"1240\"><strong data-start=\"1017\" data-end=\"1027\">Definition: <\/strong>A pain that occurs in young women, usually when menstruation first starts. It is not associated with a health problem or other illness. It is caused by the uterus contracting as part of the menstrual cycle.  <\/p><\/li><li class=\"\" data-start=\"1244\" data-end=\"1399\"><p class=\"\" data-start=\"1246\" data-end=\"1399\"><strong data-start=\"1246\" data-end=\"1256\">Cause:<\/strong> The uterus contracts to expel menstrual blood. These contractions can be strong enough to block blood flow, which causes pain. <\/p><\/li><li class=\"\" data-start=\"1403\" data-end=\"1544\"><p class=\"\" data-start=\"1405\" data-end=\"1544\"><strong data-start=\"1405\" data-end=\"1420\">Symptoms: <\/strong>Severe cramping in the lower abdomen, lower back and groin, nausea, dizziness and often low back pain.<\/p><\/li><\/ul><\/li><li class=\"\" data-start=\"1546\" data-end=\"2083\"><p class=\"\" data-start=\"1549\" data-end=\"1603\"><strong data-start=\"1549\" data-end=\"1603\">Secondary dysmenorrhea (menstrual cramps due to illness):<\/strong><\/p><ul data-start=\"1607\" data-end=\"2083\"><li class=\"\" data-start=\"1607\" data-end=\"1786\"><p class=\"\" data-start=\"1609\" data-end=\"1786\">Definition: <strong data-start=\"1609\" data-end=\"1619\">Menstrual cramps can increase in intensity with age, especially <\/strong>in the 30s and beyond. This type of pain is usually caused by another health problem. <\/p><\/li><li class=\"\" data-start=\"1790\" data-end=\"1952\"><p class=\"\" data-start=\"1792\" data-end=\"1952\"><strong data-start=\"1792\" data-end=\"1802\">Cause:<\/strong> Conditions such as uterine fibroids, endometriosis, pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) or menstrual irregularities can lead to secondary dysmenorrhea.<\/p><\/li><li class=\"\" data-start=\"1956\" data-end=\"2083\"><p class=\"\" data-start=\"1958\" data-end=\"2083\"><strong data-start=\"1958\" data-end=\"1973\">Symptoms: <\/strong>Longer and more severe contractions, irregular bleeding or excessive bleeding.<\/p><\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ol><h4 class=\"\" data-start=\"2085\" data-end=\"2142\"><strong data-start=\"2090\" data-end=\"2142\">What can be done for menstrual pain (dysmenorrhea)?<\/strong><\/h4><p class=\"\" data-start=\"2144\" data-end=\"2375\">There are many different ways to relieve menstrual cramps. Every woman&#8217;s experience is different, so it is important to find out which methods work best for you. Here are some suggestions for managing menstrual cramps:  <\/p><ol data-start=\"2377\" data-end=\"4723\"><li class=\"\" data-start=\"2377\" data-end=\"2758\"><p class=\"\" data-start=\"2380\" data-end=\"2410\"><strong data-start=\"2380\" data-end=\"2410\">Painkillers and Medicines:<\/strong><\/p><ul data-start=\"2414\" data-end=\"2758\"><li class=\"\" data-start=\"2414\" data-end=\"2633\"><p class=\"\" data-start=\"2416\" data-end=\"2633\"><strong data-start=\"2416\" data-end=\"2467\">NSAIDs (Nonsteroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs):<\/strong> Many painkillers other than paracetamol are commonly used to relieve pain caused by menstrual cramps.<\/p><\/li><li class=\"\" data-start=\"2637\" data-end=\"2758\"><p class=\"\" data-start=\"2639\" data-end=\"2758\"><strong data-start=\"2639\" data-end=\"2665\">Use of painkillers: <\/strong>Taking painkillers at the onset of the first contractions can relieve the intensity of the contractions.<\/p><\/li><\/ul><\/li><li class=\"\" data-start=\"2760\" data-end=\"3064\"><p class=\"\" data-start=\"2763\" data-end=\"2781\"><strong data-start=\"2763\" data-end=\"2781\">Applying Heat:<\/strong><\/p><ul data-start=\"2785\" data-end=\"3064\"><li class=\"\" data-start=\"2785\" data-end=\"2959\"><p class=\"\" data-start=\"2787\" data-end=\"2959\"><strong data-start=\"2787\" data-end=\"2826\">Hot Water Bag or Heating Pad: <\/strong>Applying heat to the abdomen can relax uterine contractions and relieve pain.
