HSG (Uterine Film)
Hysterosalpingography (HSG), commonly known as a uterine film, is a radiological imaging method used to assess the condition of the uterus and tubes. It is especially applied to diagnose infertility, to check the patency of the tubes and to determine intrauterine structural abnormalities.
During the HSG procedure, a special contrast agent is administered through the cervix and the internal structure of the uterus and tubes is visualized with an X-ray machine. This will determine whether the tubes are open and whether there are abnormalities in the uterus such as fibroids or polyps. The procedure is usually performed a few days after the end of menstruation and takes about 5-10 minutes.
Why is a uterine X-ray done?
- Infertility assessment
- Investigating the causes of recurrent miscarriages
- Detection of intrauterine adhesions, fibroids, polyps or congenital structural disorders
- Assessing the condition of the tubes before in vitro fertilization (IVF) or insemination (IUI)
The HSG procedure may cause a slight feeling of discomfort but is usually painless or minimally painful. Mild spotting or cramping may occur after the procedure. In these aspects, HSG plays an important role in identifying anatomical problems that may cause infertility and sheds light on the correct treatment planning.
