Vaginal Birth After Cesarean (VBAC) refers to when a mother who has previously delivered via cesarean section gives birth vaginally in a subsequent pregnancy. In the past, it was believed that once a cesarean, always a cesarean; however, today many women can safely have a vaginal birth if certain conditions are met.

The main advantages of VBAC include a faster recovery period, a reduced risk of infection, and quicker return of the mother’s mobility after birth. Additionally, it eliminates the risks associated with repeat cesarean surgery. However, certain criteria must be met in order for this method to be considered safe and feasible.

Eligibility criteria for VBAC (Vaginal Birth After Cesarean):

• A previous cesarean delivery performed with a low transverse (lower uterine segment) incision
• Situations where the uterus has not been overly strained and the risk of rupture is low
• Good overall health of both the mother and the baby
• Spontaneous onset of labor or the ability to safely administer labor induction under appropriate conditions

Not every expectant mother is a suitable candidate for VBAC. Factors such as the risk of uterine rupture, having a large baby, or complications related to the reason for the previous cesarean should be thoroughly evaluated by the doctor.
